“Kuveni, they’re here, right? You said they got here last night! It’s already almost two o’clock!” Charlie badgered as he bounced up and down excitedly, awaiting his father’s arrival in the banquet hall.

“Yes, my young friend, they are here,” Kuveni reassured him patiently. “Master Edmund and Lady Supriya both had very tiring missions, and they did not arrive here until almost four in the morning. They need their rest.”

“Come on, let’s play another round of Yaksha ping pong,” Anders suggested as he tugged Charlie up from his position at the table and dragged him across the room to a medieval-looking ping pong table.

“Guys, I know we’ve had our differences, but I really need your human help,” Neha needled the Ramachandrans as they sat in elaborately carved wooden chairs along the old stone wall of the banquet hall, watching her tenth hour of unsuccessful attempts to engage her Rakshasa recruits in a spoken conversation.

“Surely there are others more qualified than us,” Ramya Ramachandran demurred. “Carlos and Anne were in the office, and I saw the Syeds reading in the parlor. Perhaps Reverend Rutherford would be a better choice.”

Neha sighed with frustration. “He’s busy leading Sunday services in the chapel. A bunch of our human allies are in there with him, and they look like they’re finding comfort with his optimism about our raging apocalypse, so I can’t disturb them. Look, I’m getting kind of desperate here. This is way harder than I thought. Nadia and Ebrahim already tried earlier, Carlos and Anne gave up before they even started, I’m pretty sure Angus and Duncan are hiding from me, and Paul… Dr. White… is napping now after six hours of working on getting them to emulate the most basic human behaviors. I still can’t even get them to make eye contact with me, and I’m their bloody messiah! Surely your years of parenting a difficult child must have taught you something that can be useful!”

As the Ramachandran’s looked uncomfortably down at the floor, Mélusine materialized by Neha’s side and whispered in her ear. “Ma chérie, let them be.”

“Dad!” Neha exclaimed as Vibhishana and Shanti whooshed into the banquet hall. “What took you so long?! I summoned you an eternity ago!”

Vibhishana and Shanti hugged her, and then nodded polite hellos to the Ramachandrans and Mélusine. “We were close to a valuable breakthrough in Washington,” Vibhishana explained. “We thought we had a secret meeting scheduled with the Senate majority leader, but then she was a no-show. It’s unclear whether the error was intentional or simply an oversight.”

“Bummer,” Neha whispered. “I’ve never liked that woman. She is one of the most compulsive denial addicts I’ve ever met.”

“Yes, I agree,” Shanti replied. “And her influence is strong among her party. We knew it would be a difficult road with the Republicans, given the success Ravana had with them, but we haven’t been able to make nearly the headway with the Democrats that I thought we would. We’re running dangerously behind schedule.”

“Maybe Lord Shiva should pay her a visit with his godly light and put some of her denial to rest,” Neha suggested half-jokingly.
